This year our Beye school students are learning all about the importance of getting 60 minutes of exercise a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our students have been playing games like Exercise Heroes, which had students saving each other from the couch potatoes and doing partner exercises. At the end of the partner exercise, students would hi-five each other and say to each other,"60 a day, will keep me in play!" The students learned that by exercising 60 minutes a day it will allow them stay in play during games and activities due to a higher level of cardiovascular endurance; stay in "play" in the classroom by staying focused and alert while learning, and having stronger bones and muscles, which will reduce injuries and keep them in play during sports and exercise.
In addition to learning how exercising 60 minutes keeps our bodies healthy, we are also learning about how exercise makes us feel good about ourselves. It is important to remember to not always focus on scores and numbers when it comes to exercise and focus on those good feelings we receive from exercise. In the game Toy Story, there three "bad guys" named Zurg, Sid, and Lotso. If a student was tagged by one of these three "bad guys" they had to go off to the side of the playing area and do Buzz Blast Offs (Squat Jumps), Woody and Jessie Cowboy rides (galloping), or Military Men push up positions. At the end of each of these exercises, students looked into the mirror (exercise poster on wall) and exclaimed with pride,"I feel good!).
We will continue to focus on exercise for the rest of the first trimester and focus on those good feelings we get from exercise, as well as remembering that,"60 a day will keep me in play!"
